4 Charged in Chicago Teen's Fatal Beating
Embedded video from CNN Video
This story is brought to you by...Karen Hawkens, AP
CHICAGO (Sept. 28) – Cell phone footage showing a group of teens viciously kicking and striking a 16-year-old honors student with splintered railroad ties has ramped up pressure on Chicago officials to address chronic violence that has led to dozens of deaths of city teens each year.
The graphic video of the afternoon melee emerged on local news stations over the weekend, showing the fatal beating of Derrion Albert, a sophomore honor roll student at Christian Fenger Academy High School. His death was the latest addition to a rising toll: More than 30 students were killed last school year, and the city could exceed that number this year.
Prosecutors charged four teenagers Monday with fatally beating Albert, who was walking to a bus stop when he got caught up in the mob street fighting, authorities said. The violence stemmed from a shooting early Thursday morning involving two groups of students from different neighborhoods, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County prosecutor's office. When school ended, members of the groups began fighting near the Agape Community Center.
During the attack, captured in part on a bystander's cell phone video, Albert is struck on the head by one of several young men wielding wooden planks. After he falls to the ground and appears to try to get up, he is struck again and then kicked. Simonton said Albert was a bystander and not part of either group.
Prosecutors charged Silvonus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, Eric Carson, 16, and Eugene Bailey, 18, with first-degree murder, Simonton said.
Shannon, Riley and Carson were ordered held without bond Monday. The Cook County Public Defender's Office, which represented the three teenagers in court, had no immediate comment. Bailey was due in bond court Tuesday, Simonton said.
Chicago police said they were looking for at least three more suspects, but would not discuss a possible motive for the attack.
Simonton said Albert was knocked unconscious when Carson struck him in the head with a board and a second person punched him in the face. Albert regained consciousness and was trying to get up when he was attacked a second time by five people, struck in the head with a board by Riley and stomped in the head by Shannon, Simonton said.
Desiyan Bacon, Bailey's aunt, said her nephew didn't have anything to do with the beating and was a friend of the victim.
"They need to stop the crime, but when they do it, they need to get the right person," Bacon said.
Fenger students said Albert's death intensified tensions at the school, with arguments about him breaking out in hallways all day Monday. Several blocks away, a memorial erected on the spot where he was beaten was burned down. Police also increased patrols before and after school and in the neighborhood.
"They're still trying to retaliate," said sophomore Toni Gardner, 15. She did not elaborate.
For Chicago, a sharp rise in violent student deaths during the past three school years — most from shootings off school property — have been a tragedy and an embarrassment.
Before 2006, an average of 10-15 students were fatally shot each year. That climbed to 24 fatal shootings in the 2006-07 school year, 23 deaths and 211 shootings in the 2007-08 school year and 34 deaths and 290 shootings last school year.
At a Monday vigil at the school, some community members said the solution lies with parents.
"It is our problem. We have to take control of our children," said Dawn Allen, who attended the vigil where a group of residents tried to force their way into the school before being turned back by police.
This month, the city announced a $30 million project that targets 1,200 high school pupils identified as most at risk to become victims of gun violence, giving them full-time mentors and part-time jobs to keep them off the streets. Some money also will pay for more security guards and to provide safe passage for students forced to travel through areas with active street gangs.
Albert's family attended a news conference Monday with school district leaders and police, but did not speak. They wore T-shirts with a picture of him in a cap and gown, with the words, "Gone too soon, too young."
But Annette Holt, mother of Blair Holt, a Chicago Public Schools student who was shot on a city bus two years ago, said Albert represented "another promising future, just snuffed out because of violence."
"Someone said he (Derrion) was in the wrong place at the wrong time," she said. "No, he wasn't. He was in the right place. He was coming from school."
This is such a shocking story! Why kill someone that hasn't done anything to you? That's the most cold hearted thing you can possibly do. The brutal death is a sudden reminder of how the world has become and how cruel some people can be. I hope those guys get what they deserve. Since they took Derrion's life from him, they shouldn't get to see another day. They should get LIFE! R.I.P. Derrion! And may God bless his family! My prayers are with you!

2009 VMAs Review
Okay, so last night's VMAs were good. The whole tribute thing for Michael Jackson was good. Madonna's speech made me cry. I'm sure I'm not the only one it had that affect on. Janet was wonderful. Close to the end of her performance, I could tell she was getting a little emotional. But she did good. And she looked good.
Russell Brand is funny and his accent alone makes me crack up. When Taylor Swift won the VMA, she looked like she was in awe. And then Kanye had to come up there and interrupt her moment, which was rude. Kanye's ego stepped in. He came up there and basically said Beyonce should have won and Taylor shouldn't have. People are seriously tired of him interrupting things and wanting things his way. Beyonce is good obviously they thought Taylor deserved it. Later in the show, Beyonce did a very nice thing by letting Taylor Swift have her moment and give an acceptance speech when it was really her time to give her acceptance speech. That was a very nice gesture.
My most favorite performances were those from Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Pink. To me, everything Beyonce does is great. She worked up a sweat with all that dancing. I know she burned some calories. LOL. Lady Gaga can really sing. That was my first time really hearing her sing. I love Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is the like a girl next door kinda chick and she has a good country voice. Pink's perfomance was incredible. She still sung the right notes and stayed on key although she was 30 ft from the ground. And then she was swing back and forth! She's very talented!
Jennifer Lopez looked wonderful last night in her dress and heels! Beyonce looked stunning! Taylor Swift's dress was fab! Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, Shakira, Pink, and Megan Fox looked good! But there was one person there that we weren't quite sure about. And thats Lady Gaga. From the very beginning she had on this outfit with a mask and feathers and all and it she had on a black dress. Too weird! On stage, her outfit was cute though. But when she got off and had that red thing on (i'm not sure what to call it), she definitely came across as weird. But from what I'm hearing, thats nothing new when it comes to her.
Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performance was very good. That was until Lil Mama ran up on the stage. Why did she have to mess it up. Her and Kanye both. They should have just stayed in their damn seats! Jay-Z and Alicia didn't need her help. DAMN!
I was happy when I saw the "This Is It" trailer. It looked like it would be pretty good and give us a closer look on how Michael Jackson was when it came to performing. I doubt if I'll be able to go watch it though because I already know its gonna be sold out. But I'll try. Michael Jackson would have been so proud of Janet and all the love that the people at the VMAs had for him last night. It was there at the VMAs that him and ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley shared their infamous kiss.
Overall, I would grade the VMA as good. It was alot of chaos this year. Lil Mama and Kanye West sorta messed it up. But the show kept moving and the rest of it was good!

9/11: 8 years later

On this day at this time in 2001, the world was in awe. The Twin World Trade Center had just been bombed by terrorists. The idea for the September 11 plot came from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who first presented the idea to Osama bin Laden in 1996. Early in the morning on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, nineteen hijackers took control of four commercial airliners en route to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Boston, Newark, and Washington, D.C. (Washington Dulles International Airport). At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 was crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower, followed by United Airlines Flight 175 which hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.Another group of hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. A fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93, whose ultimate target was thought to be either the United States Capitol or White House, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 10:03 a.m, after the passengers on board engaged in a fight with the hijackers.he south tower (2 WTC) fell at approximately 9:59 a.m., after burning for 56 minutes in a fire caused by the impact of United Airlines Flight 175. The north tower (1 WTC) collapsed at 10:28 a.m., after burning for approximately 102 minutes. When the north tower collapsed, debris heavily damaged the nearby 7 World Trade Center (7 WTC) building. Its structural integrity was further compromised by fires, and the building collapsed later in the day at 5:20 p.m.
n addition to the 110-floor Twin Towers of the World Trade Center itself, numerous other buildings at the World Trade Center site were destroyed or badly damaged, including 7 World Trade Center, 6 World Trade Center, 5 World Trade Center, 4 World Trade Center, the Marriott World Trade Center (3 WTC), and the World Financial Center complex and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The New York City Fire Department dispatched 200 units to the location. The 9/11 incident is one of the U.S.A.'s biggest tragedies. So many people lost family members. It affected the U.S. forever. Although it has been 8 years since the terrible tragedy, everyone remembers that day clearly. Everyone remember what they were doing. I was in 2nd grade and it happened right before we were suppose to go to P.E. We couldnt go to P.E. though because the school was on lockdown. When I got home, I asked my mom what the fuss was all about. She said the World Trade Center had been bombed. I didnt know what the WTC was. My grandma and her was watching CNN and I saw what happened and how it happened. I was in shock. All those people were dead. It was a somber day. The next day at school, my teacher explained what had happened. Although I was young, I still felt sad about the situation. Innocent people had died because of nonsense. For like 6 months or so..CNN covered the story and gave updates. I watched the news everyday I came home from school. I wanted to know what was gonna be done next. The 9/11 attack changed the world forever. In reality, the United States will NEVER be the same. President Bush definitely didnt handle it right. Thanks to him, the United States had to lose more Americans because of the War in Iraq. I wish he would have had more sense and handled the situation correctly. It's all so sad. Every 9/11, I take a moment of silence to remember the 3,017 people who died and their families. Let's continue to do that. 9/11 should be a reserved holiday. Maybe one day. But until then, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Chris Brown on Larry King
Okay, so I watched Chris Brown on Larry King last night. I truly believe that his apology was sincere. He know that he messed up..big time. He probally even lost a couple of fans because of his mistake. People need to realize that everyone makes mistakes. People dont have to keep dwelling on the situation. He received community service and five years probation. Leave the man alone. Everyone messes up every now and then. We dont really know the circumstances of the situation so why judge him?? How would you feel if someone repeatedly judged you? You wouldnt like it one bit. And another thing, couples have disputes and violent rages but that is none of our business. I dont understand how some people talk about celebrities and act like they cant make mistakes or anything. Humans make mistakes. I also get tired of people talking about someone else when their own closets arent clean. Im not justifying what he did because he was wrong but Im saying just let it go people!!! Leave the man alone and let him move on with his life.
